The Christmas Stocking
November 16, 2008
History of the Christmas Stocking:
The tradition of the Christmas stocking seems to have originated in around the third century and involves the Bishop of Myra who became known as Saint Nicholas. The legend goes that there was a righteous and honorable man whose wife had died, leaving him to care for their three daughters. The tradition in that country at the time was that a daughter had to have a dowry to be able to get married, as this man was poor he felt bad thinking his daughters would never be able to marry. One day this information came to the attention of Nicholas the Bishop of Myra, so late one night he went to the man’s cottage. Looking in the window he saw that the daughters had washed cloths and hung them around the fireplace to dry, noticing their stockings hanging with the rest of their clothes he took out three small bags of gold and carefully tossed them through the open window into the stockings. The next morning as the daughters were gathering their clothes they found the bags of gold, now they had money for a dowry! Of course each girl married well and lived happily ever after. As this legend grew more people began to leave stockings or small sacks hanging around the fire place in hopes that Saint Nicholas would leave them something as well.
A little further north in Holland, children used to set out their wooden clogs with straw in them, Father Christmas would feed the straw to his reindeer and leave a treat or small gift in the clog for the child. Italian children had a similar tradition of leaving their shoes out by the door so that Papa Noel would leave a little treat or something in them. In France the children left their shoes indoors by the fireplace and would then find treats or small gifts in them. In Puerto Rico the children would use small boxes, where they would put flowers and other greenery to be left for the three Wise Men or the three Kings.
Christmas Stockings in America:
As with any legend there are several variations. But the most likely way that hanging stockings became an American tradition was from all the different immigrants’ coming to America and bringing their own traditions with them and then being in close proximity to each other the traditions began to merge and alter into what we have today. Another person that helped the tradition of hanging stockings by the fireplace was Clement Moore and his most famous of poems A Visit from St. Nicholas, which today is called The Night before Christmas. And as anyone who has read the poem would know, it says, the stockings were hung by the chimney with care in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there. So a combination of different traditions and legends and famous poets gave birth to an American tradition. And today the Christmas stocking is an essential part in the celebration of Christmas in America. Although the practice of using everyday wearable socks has given way to specialty Christmas stockings. Today there is a wide selection of Christmas stockings for everyone and even a selection for pets.

Historic Significance of Celtic Rosary
November 15, 2008
Jewelry is synonymous to women. It has been in use since times immemorial. In the olden days when man had no means of displaying fashion in a commercial sense, beads made of wood or stone were used as a fashion statement. With time, the use of jewelry transformed from a mere ‘every day use’ product to an item of luxury. At present almost all formal as well as casual occasions are associated with jewelry. Celtic rosary is an important part of fashion and is often looked on as a means of enhancing one’s personal appearance.
It Is A True reminder Of Your Past
Celtic rosary is a symbol of the Celtic art. The shapes and designs which festoon a typical Celtic rosary have been inspired by the designs of the Celtic era. Hence, the product is a reminder of our ancient past and is therefore preferred by people from all walks of life. It is often considered as a living tradition wherein people have the privilege of using an antique design in their present day life.
It Is Related To Symbols Of The Celtic Era
Like the gold and silver jewelry, the Celtic rosary is also known for its strong bonding with the symbols of the Celtic era. If we go back in time then the first Celtic jewelry was introduced well before 450CE. There have also been talks of the Celtic spirals and other symbols being imbibed in the creation of the Celtic rosary. Hence, it is good to remember that the jewelry has a strong link with our ancient generations.
Purchase Celtic Rosary from well known shops
While out purchasing a suitable Celtic rosary, it is advisable that you visit a well known shop or a renowned showroom. Over here, the chances of you getting conned are very less and therefore you have the privilege of choosing an item which is both high in quality and good in looks. Likewise, if you wish to get yourself an ordinary run of the mill stuff, you may opt for an ordinary shop. Likewise, it is advised that you purchase a Celtic rosary after consulting your friends and a seasoned salesman.
You May use The Services Of The World Wide Web
In case you are a busy person and you do not have adequate time on your hands, you may like to use the services of the World Wide Web and get a Celtic rosary delivered to your doorstep. While ding so, you need to remember that a secured site is beneficial in the longer run. Not only would your transactions be secure, you would also have the advantage of procuring a genuine piece of jewelry, which is free from misuse.
Documentations Of Celtic Art
If we go back into the annals of history, then it would not be incorrect to state that Celtic art was appreciated and preferred in the Celtic era. There are numerous instances wherein we find a clear example of the Celtic rosary being documented in the Book Of Durrow, Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book Of Kells. The three books are often called illuminations and are therefore considered an authentic proof of Celtic jewelry.

Claddagh Rings - History and Mystery
November 15, 2008
The history of Claddagh rings is somewhat limited in fact, but it is more fun to review the legends that have grown up around the appearance of this fine example of beautiful craftsmanship representing the themes of loyalty, love, friendship and romance. The mystery whether there was actually a prince who loved a commoner so much that he could convince the maiden’s father that his motives were honest and trustworthy is one of the interesting versions that have grown up around the origin of the ring. This version relies on a story that could be true and that people would like to be true, since the only magical and mysterious element in this Claddagh ring fairy tale is the magic of true love.
A Likely Origin
Another wonderful Claddagh ring story which also portrays true love is that of Richard Joyce or Joyes who spent 14 years learning the jeweler’s craft as a slave. He did his work so well that his master was willing to let Joyce marry his only daughter. Instead, Joyce returned to his native village of Claddagh and presented his lady with the ring he had fashioned during the years of captivity. She had evidently remained just as faithful to him as he was to her and they were married, using the ring known thereafter as the Claddagh ring as a wedding ring.
Distance
Certainly in the Richard Joyce Claddagh ring story, the concept that true love and loyalty is not affected by distance from the other party is displayed as a perfect example of such love. In the mid 1700s when the Claddagh ring was designed, the distance between the West Indies and Ireland was enormous in many ways. There was a great distance in cultures, geography, living style and every other possible facet of the term. In the days of instant chat and cell phones, it is hard to imagine loving someone and being unable to contact them for years at a time.
Separation
Physical separation from a loved one is hard. To consider being separated for months or even years is nearly inconceivable in the modern world, yet Joyce and his lady willingly determined that they would be separated for a relatively short term in order to meet the financial needs brought about by their impending commitment to each other. The Claddagh ring that he designed and created during a time of separation that extended to years is a thing of beauty, yet it also represents a beautiful display of steadfast commitment to another person. It is a shining example that more couples should be willing to emulate.
Homecoming
Of course, the happy ending of the Claddagh ring story makes it popular as well. Joyce was able to be freed from his slave master, refusing all enticements of love, wealth, and respect to return to a totally unknown reception in Ireland’s Claddagh village. The fact that the Claddagh ring design has survived and is well loved globally is a trophy to the success of happily ever after stories even today.
There is a lot of history behind Claddagh Rings. This article about the history and mystery of the Claddagh Ring was sponsored by Irish Indeed. http://www.irishindeed.com

How the Early Pilgrims Celebrated Thanksgiving
November 13, 2008
It is a basic notion that during the 1600’s, accurately in the year 1621, the English settlers and the Wampanoag Indians got together and shared a fantastic fall harvest feast to celebrate the bounty from the rich earth. Today this celebratory feast is acknowledged to be one of the first Thanksgiving festivities in the early days of the colonies. While that long ago feast is supposed by a lot of people to be the first Thanksgiving celebration, it was, in fact, part of a long existing custom of celebrating the seasonal harvest and giving thanks for a good bounty of crops that would last through the long hard winter. Many Native American tribes of what would be named America, including the Pueblo, Cherokee, Shawnee, Huron, Creek, Blackfoot and so many others would hold huge harvest festivals, consisting in ceremonial dances, races, games and other cheerful celebrations of gratefulness hundreds of years before the European peoples arrived.
If you are like me, you are surely wondering the kind of meals served at the harvest feast. Historians, as usual, are not one hundred percent sure regarding it; however they are sure that pilgrims weren’t eating pumpkin pies nor building castle towers with mashed potatoes. However, it is easy to think that the list of meat available during this period of time should surely include venison as well as several types wild poultry such as duck, goose as well as wild turkey. While there are hundreds of manuscripts describing such feast, the most detailed description of this celebration of late harvest date of 1621 and was written by a man called Edward Winslow. It is from his manuscript called “A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth” that historians have gleaned the greatest part of information about this first Thanksgiving celebration:
“…Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors. They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with a little help beside, served the company almost a week. At which time, among other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed upon our governor, and upon the captain, and others. And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want that we often wish you partakers of our plenty…” - Edward Winslow, 1595-1655.
Although the first Thanksgiving dinners were not concentrated on the turkey; today’s usual meal primarily focuses around this animal. During the 17th century, vegetables were not as important as of today, so the meal of this period of time included a lot of different meats. The many types of vegetables we take for granted today were not available to the colonists. Freezing methods did not exist; which means that the vegetable consumption was based on seasonal harvests. Because the colonists and Wampanoag tribe had no refrigeration in the 1600s, they dried a lot of their foods to preserve them. They would dry corn, wild boar hams, fish, venison, and many wild herbs.

Turquoise Jewelry – The Age Old Concept and the Modern World
November 12, 2008
Although very different from other gemstone like rubies, diamonds, emeralds, etc. turquoise is respected the world over as a gemstone. It is in fact a mineral that ranges from shades of blue green to blue to greenish-gray. The most attractive and commonly used shade in turquoise jewelry today is the blue. The shades of the stone depend on the amount of copper that is present in the mineral.
A timeless mineral
Turquoise has not lost its charm. It is as timeless as perhaps diamonds. Turquoise jewelry is as much in demand today as it was decades ago. Early jewelry artisans used the mineral in combination with silver to create turquoise jewelry like bracelets, neckwear and belt buckles. The same is done today. Turquoise jewelry is available in a combination of all sorts of metals. The one combination that stands out the most thought is the combination of turquoise and sterling silver. This combination is most certainly one of the leading trends in modern jewelry.
Stimulated turquoise jewelry
Turquoise has always been in high demand and therefore as the laws of economics state, the price has to be directly proportionate. Today this gemstone comes with a hefty price tag and therefore most jewelry buffs are turning to what is called stimulated turquoise. The turquoise jewelry that is made from this kind of turquoise is equally charming and is available in the same variety of shade minus the big price tag. Stimulated turquoise jewelry too is most often set in silver as this combination of blue and silver is unbeatable.
Unique characteristics of a unique metal
One of the greatest and most exclusive characteristic of turquoise is that it is opaque. Both the stimulated and the genuine varieties posses this quality and it is this quality that makes turquoise jewelry easy to buy. Unlike other transparent gemstones where one needs to be concerned with flaws, clarity and reflection, turquoise needs none of these factors to prove its worth. The only thing that concerns buyer when it comes to this particular gemstone is color. The most appealing color if the sky blue, this is also called the robin’s egg and is popularly used buy jewelry designers all over while making turquoise jewelry.
The perfect combination
Irrespective of whether the gemstone in the turquoise jewelry is genuine or stimulated the gemstone when pair with diamonds, zircons and silver can make for a stunning combination. This combination is perhaps the most universally loved one and therefore one will find that most turquoise jewelry is set in silver and if combined with another gemstone it is most often a white one. The sparkle of the white stone is a brilliant compliment to the smoothness and opaqueness of the turquoise. While wearing turquoise jewelry to match apparel, whites, navy blue, blacks and shades of blue go perfectly well with turquoise. For instance, teaming a nice black dress with a large turquoise necklace will look more elegant that you can imagine.

Tennessee Cowboy Culture and What it Represents
November 10, 2008
A cowboy is no “boy” as it sounds but according to the Webster’s dictionary, a cowboy is “somebody who is hired to take care of the cattle, performing duties on a horseback, particularly in the western United States”. Although the culture has been popularized by many western movies in the past, the cowboy culture still exists despite the decline in themed movie-making.
Many cowboys still live across the US although the mode of their transport has modernized from a horse to four wheelers or pickup trucks. Tennessee cowboys are no different and have also gone modern themselves over time. Although the clothing like cowboy boots, the western gun holster and transport modes have changed, the Tennessee cowboys still follow the same rules, code of conduct and standards that were set by the cowboys of the earlier generations.
Changing times have changes the perception of a cowboy somewhat. This change has been partly because of the western movies and partly due to the changing technology and times.
Tennessee Cowboys
The original cowboys of Tennessee were soldiers form the American civil war that had lost their homes and did not know where to return to and hence drifted west generally since at that time the west was a wide open and barren country and men only carried what they could on horsebacks. These lost men were then often hired by ranch owners to look after their livestock in order to tend to them and round up the wilder variety from their midst. When the cattle were ready to be slaughtered, the cowboys were responsible to round them up and herd them to the markets that were miles away.
This era lasted for almost three decades during which the Tennessee cowboys who also herded cattle became folklore and made a lasting impression on the American history. A cowboy is not necessarily the one who sports a wrangler and boots, along with wide-brimmed hats that carried guns. As the Tennessee cowboy folklore is more about a way of life and it defined living life with utmost passion and to its fullest, even in movies we have generally seen a cowboy as the one who was free to go anywhere on the prairies with nothing or no one to stop him. This depicts the freedom that life has to offer to anyone who is willing to take it.
The cowboy culture is what every American hangs on to, even today. Although the Wranglers, boots and hats will never go out of fashion and the country music will always sound as sweet, collecting the cowboy relics and cherishing them everyone in America immense pleasure. To adopt this, we do not need to wear a pair of Wranglers or hang on to boots and hats, having a great passion and living life to the fullest is what matters as far as the Tennessee cowboy culture goes.
If you want to have a feel of this western way of life and want your kids to know more about their history, there can be nothing better than a family trip to Tennessee. Let your kids have a look at the cowboy lifestyle by visiting a ranch and participating in the activities there.

5 Steps to a Great Faux Hawk Haircut
November 7, 2008
Everyone knows about the Mohawk look; clean shaven on the sides, and a long streak of hair right in the middle. It is a style favored by a lot of celebrities, from movie stars to athletes and of course the fashionable punk rocker. However, if you want to be fashionable without looking like a copycat, go for the Faux Hawk look.
This hairstyle is coming into vogue among young people and professionals, who always want to be in on the latest trends but at the same time maintaining their individuality. The great thing about the Faux Hawk hairstyle is that you do not need to spend your precious dollars on a barber; you can easily do it yourself alone, or with a friend.
These are the things you will need to get that Faux Hawk cut:
First are some hair clippers, and scissors. Any size will do, just pick those you are comfortable with. Next get yourself some rubber or elastic bands, and a couple of mirrors. Finally, you need some hair gel, or styling mousses to set your hair correctly.
First step: Determine just how thick or wide you want the Faux Hawk to be. There are several ways you can do this, but the best method is to just measure the area between your irises.
Second step: Now you have to thoroughly wash your hair. Depending on its condition, you may have to do this a few times as you really will get a better result with squeaky clean hair. Dry it, and use a comb to divide it into three areas. Take the elastic bands and apply them on the middle section of your hair. Depending on how thick you cut your hair, you might need several.
Third step: Most of those that get the Faux Hawk haircut do it with short hair, so trim it a little bit first. If your hair is short, proceed to the next step.
Fourth step: Use the clippers to shave off the sides. Be careful not to remove everything, though; this is where the mirrors or having someone beside you will come in handy. Again using a mirror, trim a little off the sides and the middle, but leave enough to make sure the center part is longer.
Fifth step: You are almost done. Take off the rubber bands that you put in to keep the middle hair in place. Now take the hair styling mousse or gel and apply it. The directions for each gel or cream will differ, so follow the directions. Some will want you to use your hands to style the hair, while others will recommend a comb. Just make sure you apply them as instructed.
When you have applied the styling material, give it some time to dry and settle in.
That’s it; you have the Faux Mohawk look, and you did not have to spend any dollars or cents to get it.
One final word about this hairstyle: if you still want to keep your long hair, you can have the Faux Hawk and use a ponytail. This hairstyle is called a pony hawk, and is used by a growing number of people too.
Peter Garant is writing articles about How to Cut a Faux Hawk and How to Cut a Mohawk for a site about hair cuts.
