The number 13 is considered unlucky for many in the West.

Not so for many Chinese!

Just like Westerners, Chinese do share a love of lucky numbers and other superstitious beliefs, although in quite a different manner.

It is part of the Chinese culture. You’ll be surprised to see how they are willing to part with tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, simply to obtain lucky telephone or car-plate numbers.

The telephone number 8888-8888 is said to have sold for nearly $300,000 in Chengdu, a southwest Chinese city. The Beijing Olympics 2008, on the other hand, opened on August 8, 2008 (08-08-08) at 8:08 p.m.

The obsession with numbers takes place not only in China, but also other cities like Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Do not try competing for numbers such as 8 in any of these cities. Chances are that you will be out-beaten, if your pocket is not deep enough!

Chinese like to link numbers to pronunciations of the associated words. They first see how a number is sounded, then associate it to words that share similar pronunciation and interpret the number from there.

The number 8 is tremendously popular, because it is pronounced close to the sound ‘fa’, which is how words like prosperity and fortune are pronounced in the language. As a result, when they see the number 8, they will associate it with prosperity and fortune.

For the same token, the number 9 is a lucky number. It can mean enough or arrive. The number 6 is popular as well, as it implies happy and smooth.

The number 7 is popular for some, as it sounds like the word ‘complete’. In Mandarin, it can also mean wife. So 517 can mean ‘I want a wife’; as the number 5 sounds like ‘I’ and the number 1 sounds like ‘want’. 514, on the other hand, would not be popular, as the number 4 sounds like the word ‘death’, and the number could imply ‘I want to die’.

Not every number can be generalized. It depends on whether the person is interpreting it from Mandarin or one of the several Chinese dialects.

In addition to sound, numbers can also be interpreted from other angles.

For example, the number 18 is popular. This is because the number 1 — when positioned in tens — sounds like ‘definite’. The number 18, which is pronounced as shiba in Mandarin, becomes ‘definitely prosperous’. On the other hand, some may see 18 as ‘1 plus 8′, which adds up to the lucky number 9. The number, therefore, is also in high demand.

Avoid the number 4 nevertheless. It is thought to be unlucky for many. This is because, as we mentioned earlier, it sounds like death in Mandarin and several dialects.

Why is the number 13 lucky then?

The digit 1 when positioned in tens sounds like the word ‘definite’ (shi) in Mandarin and dialects such as Cantonese; while the digit 3 sounds like life, living or birth.

As a result, the number 13, which is pronounced as shisan in Mandarin, can mean ‘definitely vibrant’ or ‘assured growth’.

So how can 13 be an unlucky number?

When a loved one departs, it is always a distressing time and soon thoughts are turning towards funeral arrangements and remembrance. For those who have been touched by the life of an individual who has gone on to their final rest, there seems to be no way we can express what the person meant to us during their time on this earth.

The purchase of funeral flowers seems to be the best way to say with a gesture what can’t be expressed with mere words.

The ritual is not new; in fact there is an entire history behind the giving of funeral flowers.

Funeral flowers: their significance and symbolism

It was reputed that flowers were once used to mask the scent of decomposition before the practice of embalming became common place. Today, flowers are a symbol of the love, care and esteem we have for the deceased. They are also a way to show the surviving family remembers how much we care about them and to extend our sympathies.

In regards to what floral arrangements may symbolize, their meaning is clear—we are adding something to the ceremony that is in the bloom of life that will quickly by death—in this way, something beautiful loses it’s light and follows an inevitable end.

The sad romance of the thought is what makes flowers the appropriate item to commemorate the passing of someone near and dear to us.

Types of funeral flowers

There are numerous arrangements that fall under the category of sympathy and each type serves a specific function.

The primary and most popular types of funeral flowers include:

- Casket spray – this is usually a rather large arrangement which sits atop the casket during the service.

- Standing spray – also large, the displayed flowers sit atop an easel and rest beside the casket.

- Wreath – floral wreathes are circular in shape and often include green and brown foliage, baby’s breath and other lovely fillers to give the arrangement visual interest.

- Sympathy cross – generally sent by a religions group, crosses often have flowers that are made into the shape of a cross. These funeral flowers will sometimes have a floral cluster in the center called“swag” for an added burst of color.

- Basket – these funeral flowers, often arranged in a wicker basket, can be set on the floor near the casket.

- Plant – the wonderful thing about giving a plant as opposed to traditional funeral flowers is that the grieving family can take the item home and have a constant reminder of the dearly departed.

- Heart – a beautiful and timeless cluster of flowers that is usually fashioned in the shape of a heart. Relatives and family members usually send this type of arrangement as symbol of undying love.

- Pillow – Flowers cover a rectangular offering that has a base which is made up of moss. Swag usually accents the piece. Pillows are most often sent by close friend and relatives.

- Inside piece – these small clusters of funeral flowers are often the gift of younger relatives and are placed inside the casket with the deceased.

Arrangements range in cost, but no matter which item you choose, the bereaved will know that you cared and that is what really counts.

Locating the appropriate funeral flowers

A professional florist will be able to help you locate the flowers that best convey your sentiments. You can locate a wonderful florist online and have the flowers delivered straight to the funeral home.

Just make sure that you order the flowers well in advance as some companies cannot guarantee second day delivery service. With proper planning you can make sure that you carry on the tradition of heartfelt sympathy and love via the gift of funeral flowers.

Online dating sites are everywhere these days. Online dating is, by many estimates, one of the fasting growing internet-based businesses generating tens of billions of dollars annually for literally thousands of websites. The reason for this is simple enough: in a world where you can effectively buy, trade or do just about everything on your computer, why would finding a mate be any different? There is a far larger variety of people you can meet than would be available to you in your own town or city, and the convenience (not to mention the initial anonymity) of online dating means that you can essentially do it whenever you have a bit of free time, with hardly any preparation at all. You don’t need to look good to enter a chat room, and your hair needn’t be combed to exchange private messages. If you are interested in meeting someone who lives across town, there are sites for that – and if you are interested in getting to know someone on the other side of the world, it’s as close as the next keystroke. Today, a man from Cleveland can form a relationship with a woman from Russia as easily as he can form a relationship with a woman ten blocks away from him.

Although there is a seeming endless range of online dating sites from which to choose – catering to every taste and preference imaginable – virtually all of these sites have one very important thing in common. They charge for their services and, in some cases, the charges can be quite considerable. In these current times of economic uncertainty and belt tightening as far as disposable income is concerned, it is important to make certain that you spend your online dating dollars in a way that gives you both the best chance of finding what you are looking for and fits both your budget and your personality. In order to do this effectively, you will need to determine both what kind of services a site offers as well as what kind of services you will need.

* Subscription only sites – Increasingly, many of the larger online dating services – both national and international – have become “subscription only” sites. What this means is that the service charges its customers a monthly, quarterly, bi-annual or annual flat membership fee which then gives access to the various services the site provides. These flat fees will vary but, depending on the online dating service, can be quite expensive. The up side of these sites is that once you have paid your done until it is time to renew, and you have access to all of the site services.

There are, however, a couple downsides to these sites. The first is that once you have paid in most cases that’s it, there are no refunds. That means that if you buy a one year subscription and find your perfect match in three months and no longer require the site’s services, you’ve paid for them anyway. A second downside is that, in many cases, people don’t need all the services that a site has to offer, but end up paying for services that they don’t use with their subscription.

Before deciding on a subscription only service, make certain that you check out what services you will and won’t be using, as well what (if any) refund policy they have should you be lucky enough to find your perfect match quickly.

* Pay-per-use services – An alternative to the subscription only online dating service is the pay-per-use service. Essentially, these services operate by selling points or credits to their customers, and then charging their customers a set number of these points or credits per service the customer chooses to use. For instance, access to a private chat room may cost 20 points, while searching someone’s profile might cost 3 points – and so on. There is no subscription or membership fee, however very little (if anything) is free on these sites – and that includes even basic things like profiles of potential people you might want to get to know.

The obvious advantage of the pay-per-use services is that you ONLY pay for the services you are interested in. For example, if you don’t care about streaming audio or video within the service, you don’t need to pay for them. If you would rather chat, you can choose to spend your money on chat rooms or instant messaging – depending on what the service provides. In essence, you control how and where you spend your money. The disadvantage is that everything will cost you, even the most basic services.

* Combination services – Perhaps the most cost effective innovation in the online dating world is the combination service. Basically, these services offer a combination of the previously two listed types of services, offering their customers the maximum control over their online dating budget. In general, these services offer membership packages at a nominal monthly change (and in many cases free) which includes access to their basic services – such as looking at profiles and pictures, how-to articles and other online databases. Additional services – such as streaming video, private chat rooms, etc – cost points or credits and are not included in the basic membership price. What these types of services do is offer the things that everyone needs to date online as part of their membership, and charge only for the specialty services that customers choose to avail themselves of – keeping how much a customer chooses to spend firmly in his or her hands.

The bottom line with any online dating service is to make certain that you check the site out completely before you spend any money, and also make certain that all of the costs associated with your use of the service are spelled out in advance. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind when looking for a service is that if they won’t tell you up front how much things cost, then they probably won’t be worth what they want you to pay. Never subscribe to any service that doesn’t list ALL of their prices.

Remember that whether it is finding the girl next door or hooking up with a hot woman from the Ukraine, online dating is supposed to be fun – and it is supposed to be affordable. No matter what your online dating needs are sites that can offer them to you are available online. You simply have to find them!

The holidays can be a difficult time for those that have lost a loved one. The joy of the holidays makes emotions like grief and sadness much more profound and harder to cope with. Valley of Life, an online memorial service, is built for bereaved and grieving families looking to honor a loved one in a long-lasting way. A recent article published by the site provides helpful suggestions on how to cope with loss during Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and other holiday times of year based on the writings and discussions they have with members of the site. Below is just a summary of some of the key points the article touches on.

Holiday Tradition Can Change

There’s no need to do every activity you used to do this time of year if grief is still a major emotional factor in your life. If you feel like attending Christmas parties or baking for your church pageant is too much this year, skip it and take care of yourself. It is important to set realistic expectations for yourself on what you can successfully and happily complete. It may also be important to begin new traditions this holiday season to help begin making positive memories again.

No Shame

Don’t feel ashamed of your emotions and don’t let others make you feel bad for missing a party or church service; if they care for you they will respect your personal grieving process. Cry when you need to and find time for your self when you need to. Find ways to grieve but don’t isolate yourself from those that care most for you. The holidays bring up a wide range of emotions and it may take different things to help you work through each one.

Find Supporters

Seeking out friends and family members who care for you and understand what you’re going through is another great way to make it through a difficult holiday season. An organized support group, church group, caring coworkers, or your good friends and family can all provide the needed stability and listening ear.

Try To Celebrate

Many feel they should try to forget or push aside their memories during the holidays. In reality, it is better to embrace them, both good and bad. Many of the bereaved have found comfort during the holidays by writing to their loved ones in a journal, a letter or a blog. Some others put up a decoration, play their favorite music or light a candle that reminds them of the deceased. Doing something to remind you of your loved one during the holidays is a great way to remind yourself that in some way they will always be with you.

Give Back To Others

Joining a service organization or throwing yourself into a local volunteer project is also a great way to cope with holiday grief. You can volunteer at a local shelter, retirement home, or library. If you are able, buy a toy for a needy child or simply help an elderly person in your neighborhood clear their walkway. These little things can have a big emotional impact when you are down.

I have set up the first date with my ex. I really planned it all so carefully and the link below told me exactly what to do and some pitfalls to avoid. Now that it has been set up, I have to plan it fairly carefully. But at least I am moving in the right direction in getting my ex back

There are a lot of things I need to do to get ready for this date. That is why I have given my ex a whole week’s notice. Maybe s/he is ding the same but I bet they haven’t had a chance to see what I have seen in the link below which is full of secret tactics which are really going to help me now.

Here is the first one. I am not going to get stressed – period. That could mean I might start getting desperate again and so any pressure is a no-no. I am concentrating now on moving ahead and not going back. All that is behind me. So, I have to relax and the focus is on ENJOYING MYSELF. I hope my ex does too !

This is the second tactic. It must be a no-pressure meeting and stress free. So, that means no going over the same old problems we had. We are moving on !

Third tactic is that I am going to look great and that will radiate self confidence and I am going to show my happy side . I am well, happy and confident and I look it ! All the efforts in taking care of myself are working and I look really good.

Fourth tactic. I have to keep things positive – it is all going to be upbeat on this date. So, I am going to talk about some good things that have happened to me recently and how much I am enjoying old friends, the new gym, new colleagues etc. I might even drop in a really nice shared memory as well!

Fifth tactic. Now there are some things I have to be careful to avoid. If I don’t do that I might just drive my ex further away from me instead of getting closer. One thing I must not do is let the meeting go on too long. The pre-arranged time limit was an hour so it is not going to drag on longer than that. I am not going to even mention how hurt and miserable I have been. There is one other tactic I must avoid which is in the link below.

It is going to be great fun and we are going to enjoy ourselves and that is going to rekindle exactly the same atmosphere when we first met. If it goes really well, I am not going to extend the meeting – it is important to leave sooner rather than later so there is a real desire to see each other again.

Finally I learnt a great tactic from the site below which if I do it right will make my ex think we are back together again ! It is quite a powerful technique and very simple to carry out.

Beginning in Austria with the “Secession” in 1897, the new art movement spread immediately to Germany, became significant in interior decoration in France since the World War, and arrived in the United States after 1925. However, it had been preceded by certain voyages of discovery before the pioneers invaded the new territory.

Among these earlier excursions, one may name William Morris (1884-1896) and the English contemporaries of Ruskin, who brought a return to simpler, more direct methods of design, away from the custom of period design. Another progenitor was Louis Sullivan, the American architect.

Sullivan not only outlined much of the theory of the new style, but he gave it a real practical start in his designs of skyscrapers. Sullivan’s most brilliant pupil, Frank Lloyd Wright, continued his ideals, especially in the design of houses, fireplace ideas (http://www.ferche.com/), and in writings. The works of these two American architects became an acknowledged source of inspiration to the Europeans who launched the movement at the end of the nineteenth century.

In Germany, architects imparted great vitality to the style, and it developed rapidly in architecture and interior decoration. This German work, continuing up to the present time, has certain well-defined characteristics.

It is substantial, often heavy and vigorous, often excellent in design and color, with a sound feeling for structure, and nearly always attains the highest standards of workmanship. Its faults are racial to a certain extent; an exaggeration of the picturesque until it becomes grotesque or bizarre, a tendency towards sentimental naturalism, and often lack of good taste and refinement.

The French threw great energy into the development of a modern art in painting and sculpture, followed by the Italians. This is seen in the work of Matisse, Cezanne and others, attracting world-wide attention under such labels as “cubism,” “vorticisin,” etc. Modern French painting has been a great publicity agent for the new movement, and at times not altogether a favorable one.

It came forcibly to the attention of the American public in the exhibition of paintings held in New York in 1915, where one picture, “A Nude Descending a Flight of Stairs,” invoked a controversy that extended to the front pages of New York newspapers.

This French influence has become stronger and stronger in painting, though it is clear that it is not yet predominant, and that it is still in the transitional stage. It should be noted here that the French have developed the principles of modern art in the design of women’s wear, particularly since the war.

The modern movement also took firm root in the other European countries. It flourishes particularly in Sweden, Holland, and Denmark. After the war, the most striking development of modern art came in France. The Exposition des Arts Decoratifs, undertaken in 1925 in Paris, was an ambitious and well-planned attempt on the part of the French, in combination with industry and with the cooperation of the French government, to push the modern movement throughout the entire world.

Every nation was invited to take part by designing and furnishing an exhibition building of its own. Germany did not participate, owing to the recent war; and the United States was obliged to refuse the invitation because there was, at that time, scarcely any modern American art to exhibit. Americans would have been better off showcasing their wood burning fireplaces (http://www.ferche.com/) than any type of edifice.

To those interested in interior decoration, this French development is most significant. True, the French at times carry sophistication, exquisiteness and luxuriousness to a point where the

American does not care to follow. On the other hand, the French spirit, or personality, at its best denotes refinement of taste, richness, originality, imagination, a true sense of design, high standards of structural unity and the most expert workmanship.

The French exposition at last awakened American interest to the importance of the new movement. In this country, modern art up to that time had been followed more as a matter of interest rather than in actual practice, by small groups of American artists, critics, experts, art dealers, connoisseurs. Once “discovered,” however, American enterprise has taken swift hold of modern art. In 1920, many of the choicest exhibits at the Paris Exposition were brought to the United States and exhibited at various museums.

Textile weaving is, with architecture, among the oldest of the arts, and dates from the earliest periods of history. It was understood in Egypt, and records are found showing that it was practiced at a remote period in the Far East. The Chinese developed the silk looms and wove brocades of such beauty that they are cherished as museum pieces and used for inspiration to this day.

For a long time the secret of the origin of silk fiber was carefully guarded. Silk cocoons were eventually smuggled into India in the headdress of a Chinese prince and from there into Byzantium. India learned silk weaving from the expert weavers of China. The Greeks and the civilized people of the Near East also developed textile production.

Monuments of Assyrian and Persian sculpture and Greek vases show draperies of figured fabrics. On the vases of the sixth century B.C. are found striped patterns with designs of winged horses and chariots. Since then all races have learned the art, and it has followed the course of civilization from the East to Europe and America. This influence can especially be noted in stone fireplace designs (http://www.ferche.com/).

The product of the silk worm and its cocoon was well known to the Romans, and silk cloth was first produced in Europe about the sixth century A.D., although up to about the year 1000 it was still mainly a product of the East. Persia, Syria and Egypt were the great weaving countries during the Middle Ages.

Following the crusades, eastern workmen were brought to France and Italy. Palermo in Sicily became the greatest silk manufacturing city in the world, due to conquests in Greece and the introduction of Greek silk weavers into Sicily who were brought to the capital to instruct in their arts. The royal workshops were operated by Greek weavers.

After 1300 we do not hear as much of Sicilian silks because of the flourishing weaving industry of upper Italy. Scarcely less renowned were Granada and Seville in Spain. The export of Spanish silks began as early as the ninth century.

At the beginning of the twelfth century, Malaga and Seville also became weaving centers. Spanish silks held their own up to the Renaissance and in the next hundred years or so weaving was introduced into Flanders, Germany, Holland and Great Britain. By the thirteenth century the Italian weaving industry was fully developed.

The eastern competitors of Italy were being weakened by invaders. By the beginning of the fourteenth century, velvets were extensively produced at Genoa. At the same period the silks of Damascus were famous, and gave their name to the modern word “damask.”

In the middle of the fifteenth century, looms were established in the city of Lyons, France, and it has remained to this day one of the largest producers of textiles in the world. The industry in France made slow progress against Italian competition and with the exception of tapestry weaving it was not until the reign of Louis XIV that the weavers of France surpassed those of Italy. This was analogous with the French designs of fireplace accessories (http://www.ferche.com/) that portrayed these intricate tapestry designs.

Simple and plain velvet fabrics were known in Italy long before the year 1400. According to the Italian revenue records of 1500, cloths of silk, satin damasks and velvets, plain and cut, were made in a way unknown to the ancients. In 1539 the famous Gobelin tapestry factory was founded in France by Francis, the First. In 1690 the Beauvais Tapestry works were established.

By 1750 thousands of looms were working in England using silk that had been brought from China and India. In the seventeenth century, a great number of weavers left France with the exiled Protestants after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. England, Holland and Switzerland profited by this event. In the early nineteenth century the Austrians became great manufacturers and imported labor from Lyons and Genoa.

China has been preeminently the silk-producing country, Egypt the great country for linens, India for cottons, and Flanders for wool. In recent years England has replaced Flanders as a producer of the raw wool, and the United States has become the cotton producing country of the world.

Personal and financial safety is an important consideration when you are taking advantage of free on line dating. Here are some tips to help you stay safe.

In the past, many people have been concerned about the lack of safety in protecting yourself while meeting and interacting with people online. Actually, the problem has two dimensions. First, is personal safety. If you meet and date people as part of your free on line dating plans,, you don’t really know much about them to begin with, so if they have negative plans in mind, you may not know until it is too late. Second, safety in keeping sensitive information such as Social Security number, name address and phone number will prevent such problems as identity theft, robbery and theft from your accounts.

Screen Your Personal Information

Whether you are using a free on line dating site or a paid site, you should be cautious about displaying personal or sensitive information on the internet. You don’t want to reveal financial information at any place where a hacker can gain access. Since you don’t have to enter credit cards or bank account data on a free site, you avoid danger from this choice. If you are prudent about where you post information and what you post, you shouldn’t have a problem with safety or security issues.

Don’t Get in a Hurry

When you use free on line dating, you don’t need to be concerned about rushing through the dating process in order to get hooked up with dates before the subscription period runs out. You are far better off to take your time getting to know the other individuals that you meet on the dating site. Part of the enjoyment of the dating process is getting to know the other person well so that you begin to form an opinion of whether or not you want to take the relationship to the next step. Not putting an end date on your dating experiences means you take away much of the stress and pressure.

Trust Your Instincts

It is likely that when your instincts are telling you that a particular individual is not the one for you, you should not try to force the relationship. Because the site is set up for free on line dating, you still can avoid interacting with those who are not people that you want to meet. Don’t allow your desire to forge some new relationships to short circuit your natural caution about exposing yourself to the wrong people accessing the internet.

Guard your Personal Access

Similar to the suggestion of screening your personal information is the suggestion that you need to guard against unlimited access to you via chat, email and telephone. Even if you never post personal and sensitive information on the internet, you can still be annoyed by unwanted contacts that can at times rise to the level of harassment and stalking. With free on line dating, you don’t need to worry about access levels. You should be able to exclude specific people or groups of peoples that you aren’t interested in. After all, dating online or off should be something that is fun to do for its own sake.

Even more than the obvious reason for using a free on line dating site, check out these reasons for going with a free site vs one of the paid sites.

Essentially, once you have determined to use a dating service online, you have two major choices. You can either pay to be part of the service, or you can choose to use the free on line dating services that are becoming more and more popular nowadays. You don’t have to pay through the nose to use a dating service. In fact you may find that you will have better results from using a free service rather than using a paid site for your online dating. Here are some good reasons to check out the free services for your dating connections.

Cost Savings

Choose free on line dating sites to save money that can be placed toward the dates rather than toward subscription fees for the dating site. By using a free site, you avoid expenses of other dating costs, since you get to know the person by chatting on the internet rather than by going dancing or out for a meal. Although a relationship means getting to know each other in a variety of environments, this is more appropriately done as the relationship blossoms and grows more serious. Chatting online can allow you to explore some questions about the other person without inserting distractions into the mix.

More Variety

When you choose a free on line dating site as opposed to one where you must pay each month, you are more likely to meet more people. Obviously, the more people who belong to a dating site, the more variety and richness in the contacts will be available. Because the site is free, many people will sign up on a whim, but others will make the associations found at the free site to be part of their lifestyle and dating contact pool. You may even find that some of your interests change because you are meeting people with some new interests that you can add.

No Long Term Contracts

A free on line dating site means that you don’t need to sign up for a membership that goes on and on and continues to cost you money for each month that you participate, even if you don’t find many people that are of interest to you. You can sign up with no subscription or application fees and stay active on the site for as long as you like without paying a penny of your social budget monies.

Eliminate Blind Dates

Basically, a free on line dating site means that you are no longer going to need to suffer through those tense and unpleasant blind dates as a way to meet new people for dating purposes. You can sign up for the free site and meet as many or as few people as you like. You can date or just get better acquainted with people that you already have met online. You can avoid wasting your time on a person that you have nothing in common with, because you have learned enough about them to know that this is not a suitable pairing for you.

At http://www.online-dating-service-sg.com, you are provided with numerous resources, links and information on how to successfully conduct your Free On Line Dating or On Line Dating campaign.
